Good dental hygiene can affect your health in a number of ways. You obviously need strong teeth in order to eat, but the bright smile that comes from having a healthy mouth can also improve your overall health and well-being.

Having a healthy mouth is fortunately not all that difficult. All you need to do is follow these simple tips.

Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day
Simply brushing your teeth at least twice a day will go a long way towards keeping your mouth clean and healthy. When you brush your teeth, try to position your brush at a 45 degree angle near your gum line, and keep your gum line and your teeth in contact with your bristles. Brush the roof of your mouth and the surface of your tongue when you finish with your teeth to remove bacteria.

Floss Regularly
Flossing may seem like a hassle, but it is just as important as brushing your teeth. It removes food particles and other materials from between your teeth that brushing will miss, so make sure you floss your teeth at least once a day.

Watch Your Diet
You probably know that what you eat affects your dental health, but you may not know that this goes beyond the amount of sugar you consume. Coffee, alcohol and soda can be just as bad for your teeth as any candy, mostly because they contain ingredients that discolor and even dissolve your teeth when consumed in large quantities. On the other hand, food that is rich in calcium such as milk, yogurt, broccoli and cheese will strengthen your teeth and reduce the acids that can damage your enamel.

See Your Dentist Regularly
Your dentist can give your teeth a more thorough cleaning and check-up than you can ever give yourself, so make sure you make an appointment every six months. Even if you think there is nothing wrong, your dentist could prevent issues before they get too out of hand.
