Sleep Apnea

11 May Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a common problem. Hundreds of thousands of people suffer from the condition. For some, sleep apnea can be completely debilitating, keeping them from getting a good night’s sleep, which then keep them from feeling at their best, at his or her most productive throughout the day. But did you know that your dentist may be able to help with sleep apnea? It’s true, and here’s how.

Types of Sleep Apnea

There are two type of sleep apnea. First, Obstructive sleep apnea, which is the more common condition, occurs when the air is blocked while a person is asleep. Usually the cause of this is a collapse of soft tissues in the back of the throat that block the airway. The second type, Central sleep apnea, is an interruption in the signals given to us by our brains. Central sleep apnea is trickier to cure, and it usually accompanies or coincides with systemic disease: cancer, heart conditions, stroke, etc.

Causes

There are many reasons sleep apnea occurs, but the most common reasons are age and weight. People who are obese oftentimes suffer from the condition. People who have sinus issues, allergies, or a deviated septum are also candidates for the condition.

What can be done?

Your dentist may be able to fashion a mouth appliance that can be positioned just-so within the mouth to keep the airway open. The appliance may seem invasive at first, but for those who wear it, the invasiveness is likely to be outweighed by the quality sleep having an open airway can provide.

You may also want to consider certain lifestyle changes such as a better diet, stopping the use of tobacco (sleep apnea can be caused by tobacco use. Another reason to quit!). You may also want to change the position in which you sleep.
