Summertime is the season of late nights, of nights our watching fireworks, at barbeques, camping, hiking, vacations, etc. And oftentimes the later we tend to stay awake, or when we travel, the less we tend to stick to regular routines. Here’s a few of the ways to stick to a regular dental care routine, regardless the season.

Sometimes it can be tempting to skip a late-at-night tooth bushing, especially for children, and to reason that a quality tooth brushing can happen as soon as morning arrives. But the problem is that when teeth are not brushed the plaque continues to build up, and the possibilities begin for tooth decay and gum disease. If you have children, then the child should brush his or her teeth twice each and every day; they should also floss between any two teeth that touch.

And while summertime has its own share of sugary treats, many of which are hard on teeth, try to remember to either refuse the types of treats that can harm teeth, or consume them only in moderation. It’s tempting when we’re at a barbeque or an outdoor event to graze (consume small amounts of food over a long period of time) but when we graze it can be difficult for the mouth, and its natural cleaning properties, to rid the surfaces of the teeth of food debris. So make sure to stay clear of grazing, and drink water instead of sugary drinks, because the water will help to clean the teeth.

Most importantly have fun this summer, but just remember, that while you’re having fun, to eat/snack smarter. And remember that even though we tend to pack the summer months with activity, you should keep to regular dental visits; kids, too, would benefit from a summertime visit before the school season begins. So if you need to schedule your next appointment with your dentist at Silver Creek Family Dental, then call today.

There are a few reasons to see your dentist at Silver Creek Family Dental. Yes, one is to have a routine checkup and cleaning. Remember that dental cleanings and checkups are as much a part of quality mouth health as brushing twice daily and flossing once. During a checkup, your dentist will be able to determine any minor problem areas before they become major ones (Gingivitis, for example, is a sign of gum disease, and it is much easier to treat early, before it progresses). And your dentist can treat these conditions. But there are a number of reasons to get into your dentist’s office before that next scheduled checkup. Here’s a few of the most common…

Pain. Pain in your mouth, neck, or face could be caused by any number of reasons. Right now, in cold and flu season, pain in your teeth or around your jawline could be a sign of a sinus infection—not always, but it’s a possibility. But any pain directly in the areas of your gum line and teeth should be immediately checked out by your dentist.

Pregnancy can sometimes exacerbate certain dental conditions such as gum disease. If you are pregnant, make sure to stick to your regular dental routine, and check in with your dentist in case certain conditions have evolved.

If you have difficulty chewing or swallowing it could be a sign of a serious dental condition. Difficulty chewing, or pain directly in a tooth, is a symptom that should not be ignored. If you experience any pain while chewing make sure to see your dentist immediately.

There are a number of reasons to see your dentist regularly, and the most important thing to remember is that most dental conditions will not simply go away without some intervention. Your dentist at Silver Creek Family Dental can determine and treat dental problems before they become major. If you have any questions, or you would like to schedule your next dental appointment, then call Silver Creek Family Dental today.

Unfortunately, pregnancy causes changes in the mouth. The changes may cause certain problems, like the gum disease gingivitis. Thankfully, however, these changes usually only persist through the pregnancy.

If you are pregnant, and are still practicing a good oral care routine, you are on the right track. You should be brushing your teeth twice every day. You should be brushing your teeth for two minutes or slightly more. Although don’t overdo it, because your gums will be more sensitive during pregnancy. Clean between your teeth with floss or interdental cleaners (during pregnancy, your gums may be overly tender and red, swollen, and bleed easily, and some cleaners may be better suited—less irritating to the gums—than floss).

Nearly half of all pregnant women develop gingivitis, which is a mild form of gum disease. Thankfully gingivitis is fairly easy for your dentist to treat. Now, there is an old adage that says that women may lose a tooth because of pregnancy, but this isn’t true (which makes it not an adage but a myth). It is true that during pregnancy certain hormones may loosen the ligaments and the connections points of the teeth and bones. Usually, this condition of loose teeth, or the feeling of loose teeth, will go away after the pregnancy. If you feel like teeth are moving, you should make an appointment with your dentist, and your dentist can determine if a course of treatment is necessary.

It may be very important to keep to up with necessary dental visits, during your pregnancy. Depending on how the pregnancy affects your oral health, it may also be important to come into the dentist office for cleanings, especially when suffering from gum disease. As long as there are no unusual issues in your pregnancy that may prevent you from visiting your dentist during your pregnancy, make sure to schedule an appointment if you notice any changes in the mouth. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Make sure that you mention to your dentist any special advice or medications prescribed to by your physician. Call today to schedule your appointment with Silvercreek Family Dentistry.

Pregnancy causes a woman’s body to undergo drastic changes, but did you know it can also affect your dental health? It’s true, pregnancy can cause changes in the mouth, cause minor versions of oral disease to creep up, etc. So, how should you approach dental health during pregnancy? Here are a few helpful tips.

The pregnant approach to dental health

There’s no reason to discontinue seeing your dentist during the nine months of your pregnancy. It is important, however, that you discuss with your dentist what medications you’re taking for the pregnancy, and the current term of the pregnancy. One reason to not schedule a dental appointment, during a pregnancy, is if another doctor has declared the pregnancy high-risk, and believes that you should be getting plenty of rest.

During pregnancy, you may also notice changes in your mouth. For instance, it is common for pregnant women to have a mild form of gingivitis develop, but it’s usually easily treatable (you will want to treat problems like gingivitis immediately, as it can progress to a more severe stage of the disease—Silver Creek Family Dentistry will be able to assess the best course of treatment). Your gums may become tender and red. You can prevent this type of gingivitis by more frequent brushings, and, also, limiting the amount of snacking you do during the day. It’s common for pregnant women to eat more during this time (you’re eating for two right!), but try and limit the snacking, and, try to stay clear of sugary foods, and drinks. If you do happen to partake, remember that your mouth may be more susceptible, and should be cleaned with regular brushings and flossing. It may also be a benefit to take a fluoride mouthwash during this time. And remember, your baby relies on what you eat, your baby’s teeth will begin to develop somewhere between the third and sixth month.

If you have any questions about your dental health while you’re pregnant, or would like to make a dental plan for the duration of your pregnancy, contact Silver Creek Family Dentistry today.
